P Chidambaram
Congress leader had indicated BJP's 'hard & militaristic position' was no 'political solution'.
NEW DELHI: The government on Sunday reacted strongly over P Chidambaram's barb on existing Kashmir policy, with Union home ministry accusing the Congress of taking a "politically convenient" view to overcome that it had miserably failed to contain militancy during the decadelong previous UPA regime.

The ministry sources said the NDA government has achieved considerable success in alienating militant leadership and stopping terror funding which they claimed are showing results on the ground. "What we are witnessing now is not because of any major flaw in government's approach towards tackling complex Kashmir problem.

But, it shows desperation on Pakistan's part to destablise the PDP-BJP alliance which if it continues to complete its tenure will reduce Islamabad's nefarious influence in the state," a senior officer told ET onthe condition of anonymity.

The Congress leader in a commentary piece published in an English daily on Sunday took a jibe at "hard, muscular, militaristic position of the BJP" which he feared would not lead to a "political solution".

The problem with Chidambaram's arguments is that he fails to define the "objective" and "way forward" the policy should take, said another ministry source.

While he criticised appointment of ex-Director Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma's as interlocutor, he has forgotten that the militancy had peaked during his tenure as union home minister in 2010, ministry sources pointed out.
