The number of hotels in Qatar has almost doubled between 2014 and 2016 with luxury hotels boosting the growth of the hospitality sector. The total number of hotel rooms also increased by 46 percent during this period. There were total 13,937 hotels rooms in 2014 that increased to 20,308 in 2016. The robust growth in the number of hotels will continue in the coming years due to the proactive policies adopted by the concerned authorities for promoting tourism which in turn would attract more hotel companies to Qatar.
Rotana announced two new hotels, Downtown Arjaan and Plaza Rayhaan to open in Qatar by 2019. Minor Hotels had announced last year that it would open three hotels in Qatar in spring 2018 under its Tivoli and Oaks brands. The three properties are owned by Katara Hospitality.
Around 1.94 million international visitors came to Qatar until October 2017. The growth was propelled by the measures taken by concerned authorities to promote tourism industry and putting the country in the global tourism map.
In September last year, Qatar launched the Next Chapter of its National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030. The Next Chapter aims to attract 5.6 million visitors to Qatar annually by 2023, double the number which the country welcomed in 2016.
Qatar is targeting cruise passengers to boost its tourism and Doha Port is aiming to attract half a million cruise passengers by 2022.
