UK weather: Britain PLUNGES TO -11 as frighteningly cold wind plagues morning commuters

BRITAIN plunges to -11 degrees Celsius on Monday as frighteningly cold wind plagues morning commuters, the Met Office has forecast.

Parts of the Scottish glens are set to plummet as travellers are urged to allow extra time to scrape their cars.

Meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “We could see lows of -11 degrees Celsius across some parts of the Scottish glens first thing tomorrow.

“So you might need to scrape your car if you’re heading out tomorrow, but wherever you are you will need to wrap up warm, it’s a cold picture across the UK.

“Sunny skies for Northern Ireland, northern England, and Scotland through the day.

Frost will continue into Tuesday as bitterly cold conditions persist

“But a cloudier picture across the south, where that cloud thickens we could see the odd spit or spot of drizzle here and there and perhaps some hill fog as well.

“Highs of around five degrees in the south, two or three across some northern parts but feeling much colder than this when you add on the strength of that wind.”

Frost will continue into Tuesday as bitterly cold conditions persist.

Ms Mitchell added: “Cloud will spread its way slowly northwards through the course of Monday evening, again some hill fog around, a few spits of drizzle here and there, but clearer skies further north and again quite a sharp frost Monday night into Tuesday.

“But there is a band of rain waiting in the wings for Tuesday night into Wednesday, we could even see some hill snow in the north.”

Bookmaker Coral has cut its odds on this January being the coldest on record from 2-1 to 6-4.

The company’s Harry Aitkenhead stated: “It’s been an icy start to 2018 for the UK and tonight looks like being the coldest yet.

"We have had no choice but to continue to cut our odds and the coldest January on record certainly isn’t out of the question.

“We are expecting some of the UK to see snow this weekend but our odds suggest it may well just be north of the border.”

The south of England will see the greatest number of incidents for the Monday morning commute.
