BUNNELL — The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls Sunday evening about a social media post apparently threatening a school with the initials MHS. The post came on the eve of Flagler students’ return to classes following winter break, and callers were concerned that the post referred to Matanzas High School in Palm Coast.
An investigation revealed, however, that MHS referred to Monticello High School in Albemarle County, Virginia — not Matanzas. A suspect was identified and detailed in the Virginia case.
Still, the sheriff increased patrols at all Flagler County schools Monday and school personnel were informed of the incident.
“We immediately responded to the reported threats and parent concerns and found that they did not take place in Florida,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a written statement. “There was no credible threat to Matanzas High School.”
Staly called the safety of children and school employees a top priority and said the Sheriff’s Office will continue to have a strong presence in the county's schools to dissuade behavior of this type.
