Firefighters battling commercial fire

Massillon firefighters were called to an alarm at 405 Erie St. S around 8 p.m. and found smoke filling the building.

MASSILLON  Firefighters were staging an defensive attack on a blaze consuming a commercial building at 405 Erie St. S.

Massillon firefighters were called to the building around 8 p.m. Sunday for an alarm reporting smoke in the building.

Fire Chief Tom Burgasser said when firefighters arrived they determined that there appeared to be fire in multiple areas of the building.

With the cold temperatures and several medical calls going on at the same time, the chief said the defensive attack was warranted.

Thick, black smoke was blanketing downtown as winds pushed it toward the center of town.

It is unclear if the building is occupied but no one was in the building when the alarm sounded. The building previously was home to Brown Lumber.

Crews from Erie Valley and Perry Township provided mutual aid at the scene. Stark Fire Department Rehab Unit also was on scene.

No injuries have been reported. Burgasser expected to be on scene for some time.

Erie Street S was closed from the post office to Wetmore Avenue SE. Several side roads also were blocked by police.
