The Augusta girls basketball team improved to 4-2 Friday night with a 59-33 win over El Dorado at Augusta High School.
El Dorado was able to keep up with the Orioles in the first quarter. After Augusta jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, Madison Michaelis knocked down a three-pointer on back-to-back Wildcat possessions to bring El Dorado within a point of the Orioles. Michaelis knocked down another three near the end of the quarter, scoring all nine of the Wildcats first quarter points and tying the game up at the end of the quarter.
The Orioles came out strong in the second quarter, and started to separate themselves as the Wildcats youth and inexperience began to show. Augusta picked up a 13-point lead, scoring 21 points in the second quarter to go up 30-17 before the half. Abbee Rhodes dominated the paint, scoring eight second-quarter points.
Augusta’s defense was outstanding in the third quarter as the Orioles allowed just four points in the quarter, while scoring 16 of their own.
Most of the fourth quarter consisted of both teams shooting free throws, as Augusta cruised to a 59-33 victory.
El Dorado falls to 0-6 with the loss and will look to win their first game of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at home against Buhler.
Augusta improves to 4-2 and will go on the road and take on one of the state’s toughest teams in McPherson on Tuesday.
