New Delhi, Jan 08 (ANI): South Africa beat India by 72 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series at Cape Town on Sunday.

South Africa's Vernon Philander thrashed the Indian batting order, who ended the match with his career-best Test bowling figures of nine wickets.

South Africa were bundled out for 130 in their second innings at the stroke of lunch to hand India a target of 208-run to win on Day four.

Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay took India off to a decent start but were put on the back foot, by Proteas.

By losing wickets at regular intervals, Indian never got off the hook.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar stroked together a 49-run seventh-wicket partnership which brought India closer to the total before Philander broke the partnership by dismissing Ashwin.

Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah were dismissed in quick succession.

India were bowled out for 135 in their second innings..
