HOLLAND — Things often need time to get started in frigid weather: cars, frozen pipes, offenses.
Deadlocked with Springfield after one quarter of play and up just 20-17 11 minutes into the game, Findlay finally got its offense unthawed on Saturday, blitzing the Blue Devils 32-19 over a 101/2-minute stretch and rolling to a 76-46 nonleague victory.
Ryan Nunn and Jacob Logsdon combined for 37 points and 10 players scored to highlight a balanced Findlay attack. Nunn popped in a game-high 20 points and Logsdon added 17. Ryan Roth scored 11 points and Adam Gutting chipped in 10.
Nunn’s 3-pointer broke a 17-17 tie early in the second quarter, but it was still anybody’s game as Gutting, Logsdon (a 3-pointer) and Nunn swapped baskets with Springfield’s Michael Key, Tyler Dave and Denzel Prince.
Nunn, who scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half, then had four during a 10-5 run that put Findlay up 37-28 at the half.
Logsdon opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, Roth hit back-to-back 3’s and Gutting powered inside for two baskets. Nunn’s jumper capped a 15-8 third-quarter run that put the Trojans well out in front, 52-36.
“We played a lot better defense and we made some shots,” FHS coach Jim Rucki said after the Trojans improved their record to 7-3 with their sixth win in the last seven games.
“(Springfield) played well but was coming off a tough loss the night before (65-57 to unbeaten Sylvania Northview.) Once we got a bit of a lead, I think they lost their energy a little bit.”
Findlay knocked down 9-of-17 3-pointers, 28 of 56 shots overall and converted 11 of 12 free throw attempts. Ben Howard (8) and Isaac Schumm (5) led the Trojans to a 28-21 advantage on the boards. Findlay also committed just six turnovers.
Key led the Blue Devils (2-6) with eight points. Prince, Denzel Stuart and Dave added seven each.
A.J. Adams scored 21 points as Findlay’s junior varsity beat Springfield’s reserves, 59-51. Garit Krupp added 15 points and Isaiah Moore 11 for the Trojans (8-2).
Findlay next plays on Friday in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference game at Lima Senior and is at home Saturday against unbeaten Ottawa-Glandorf.
