The morning commute to work or school on Monday will be hampered by an overnight and Monday morning snowfall, Environment Canada says in a special weather statement for Windsor, Essex County and Chatham-Kent.

An average of 10 centimetres is expected to fall tonight as clouds move from west to east through Southwestern Ontario.

“It appears that snow will be falling over all areas during the Monday morning commute,” Environment Canada says in the statement. “Untreated roads are expected to be slippery.”

City of Windsor crews were already on the road Sunday night, salting the main routes. Plowing will begin once the snow begins to fall and accumulate, the city said in a news release.

“An average route takes from two to four hours to complete.  Once the main roads are clear, but only if more than 10 centimetres has fallen, trucks will be redeployed onto residential streets,” the city said.

The release also warns drivers to be alert, slow down and stay in control while driving in snowy conditions.  Residents are reminded to keep the sidewalks abutting their properties clear of snow and to not shovel snow onto the street.

After bitter cold this weekend — the temperature dipped to -22C overnight Saturday — the weather is turning milder this week with an expected high of 1C on Monday, -4C on Tuesday, 3C Wednesday, 6C on Thursday (with 70 per cent chance of rain) and 1C on Friday.
