The 22-year-old needs first-team football after recovering from a serious knee injury suffered while on loan at Derby County in October 2016.
He is out of Jose Mourinho's plans at Old Trafford but has scored three goals in nine reserve-team appearances this term.
Blades gaffer Chris Wilder wants to strengthen his attack in a bid to bolster their play-off hopes.
According to the Daily Mail, Wilder will enquire about the possibility of signing Wilson on loan for the rest of the season.
Manchester United striker signing would be the ideal January transfer for Aston Villa
Wilson was seen as one of United’s top prospects when he scored twice on his Premier League debut in May 2014.
He scored five goals in 25 Championship appearances for Brighton in the 2015/16 season but injuries have since hit his progress.
Speaking in October, Wilson admitted he was open to a loan move in the January transfer window.

He said: “We'll just have to talk and have a few conversations with the manager and certain people around here.
“I’m not ruling it out but we'll come to an agreement over what needs to be done.”
Reading boss Jaap Stam previously revealed the Royals have a long-term interest in Wilson.
