Dimapur, Jan. 8 (EMN): Assam Rifles personnel stationed at Medziphema on Mon. are said to have caught one person while he was reportedly attempting to smuggle “bones of tiger and elephant” – an illegal activity – into Manipur.
The establishment of the Inspector General of Assam Rifles (north) issued a press release informing of the reported capture. “Based on a specific input, Medziphema battalion under the aegis of HQ IGAR (N) established a vehicle check post in general area Kukidolong on 8 Jan. 2018.
“A Tata winger bearing No MN 01S 9491 was intercepted by the vehicle check post at around 0800 hours. Detailed search of the vehicle led to recovery of bones of tiger and elephant. The bones weighing 13 kg included a full skull with teeth, all four leg bones, complete set of backbone (vertebra), tail bone, ribs and lower neck parts of tiger. Elephant parts included two ear and nostril bones. Cash Rs. 61,455/- along with bank transfer slip of Rs 40,000/- was also recovered,” it stated.
The ‘consignment’, according to the Assam Rifles, was being smuggled by one Sum John Ngaihte of Churachandpur district in Manipur.
