Brrrrr! Salem County gets iced-in by long cold snap (PHOTOS)

While the temperature has dropped, the amount of ice in Salem County waterways has grown.

Even the Delaware River, which in recent years has rarely been seen iced over is now clogged with ice floes off the shores of Salem County.

The unusual winter sight is thanks to a stretch of recent nights where the overnight temperatures have dropped into the lower teens and even single digits.

While cold snaps are common in most winters, what's uncommon is how long the bitter weather has had the region in its grip.

The tidal Delaware River and Salem River are filled with ice. Smaller tributaries are all frozen as are many marshlands, lakes and ponds throughout the county.

Ice floes had been pushed up along river banks and boat ramps by the high winds in recent days and the tides.

Temperatures are expected to greatly moderate later in the week, but not before another round of possibly dicey winter weather Monday afternoon.
