In terms of talent, balance was spread out among the Greater Fall River Schools. Two golfers each from Diman, Durfee and Bishop Stang headline The Herald News golf all-scholastic team, with Somerset Berkley and Case each chipping in one. Here is a closer took at the top local players on the greens.
LANDON BEGIN (Diman): A sophomore and two-year starter, Begin lead the way to a 7-3 record in the Mayflower Athletic Conference South Division for the Bengals. He had a stroke average of 42.4 and a 9-1 record in match play. Begin also played well at the MAC Tournament, helping Diman to a second-place finish with a round of 82. At the State Vocational Tournament Large Division, he carded an 83 for a fourth-place finish. He was also named as a Mayflower Athletic Conference all-star for the first time this season.
REAGAN PARENT (Diman): A three-year starter for the Bengals, Parent had a stroke average of 46.3, along with a MAC match play record of 8-2. The Diman junior also carded an 85 in the State Vocational Tournament, and an 82 at the Mayflower Athletic Conference Tournament, where he also had a hole-in-one. He was also named as a Mayflower Athletic Conference all-star for the first time.
JAKE MACHADO (Case): A two-time Herald News all-scholastic, Machado was the top medalist in 11 of his 16 matches and finished the season with an average round of 39. A three-time team MVP, Machado helped guide the Cardinals to their first team state qualifier in more than 10 years. Machado was also named a South Coast Conference all-star for the third straight season.
JOHN SALAMONE (Somerset Berkley): A junior and captain of the Raiders, Salamone bounced back after a knee injury suffered last year, leading the team in stroke average with a 42.3 and pacing the team in points with 336 . He best round was at Swansea Country Club against Dighton-Rehoboth where he shot 35 for 39 points. His leadership helped immensely with the inexperienced and young Raider team.
NATHAN THO (Durfee): Tho guided the Hilltoppers with a 45.1 scoring average this season under first-year coach Mike Hunsinger. Only a sophomore, Tho was also named to the Big 3 Conference all-star team.
COLE CARMODY (Durfee): Carmody was a senior captain for the Hilltoppers and ended the season with a 45.9 average. A co-MVP of the team, Carmody was asked to play in different spots all year to benefit the team and did so without hesitation. A great leader, he was also named a Big 3 Conference all-star.
COLIN MEGGISON (Bishop Stang): The Spartans’ top player averaged 42.25 on the season and guided the Spartans to a 7-7 record. "Colin was our most consistent player this year," said Bishop Stang coach Tom Kennedy.
CALEB IKKELA (Bishop Stang): Ikkela, a two-time Herald News all-scholastic, averaged 43.61 on the season. He finished with an 88 at the Division 3 South Cape and Island Sectionals.
