Peoria woman lost $100,000 in phone scam, police say

PEORIA — A phone scam cost a Peoria woman an estimated $75,000 to $100,000 over the past three months, according to a Peoria police report.

A man using the name David Johnson called the woman in October and notified her she had won the Mega Millions and a new car, but in order to claim her prizes she needed to mail money in for tax purposes, according to a police report. The woman claimed to hear multiple voices in calls from a Jamaican area code, all claiming to be Johnson.

She mailed checks and cash to six different locations that she was told to send it to, her FedEx receipts showed.

Police attempted to call Johnson, but could not reach him, according to the report.
