Man charged with beating roommate to death with hammer

LAKELAND — A 27-year-old Winter Haven man has been accused of beating a man to death with a hammer after an argument Saturday in their home.

Polk County Sheriff's officials said Calvin Michael Ross was charged with second degree murder after they found a bloody pick hammer in the grass near the body of Johnathon Michael Miller, of Winter Haven.

Miller was found unconscious with facial and head injuries outside their home at 135 Manseau Drive when deputies arrived. He was first taken to Winter Haven Hospital then to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he died at 10:41 p.m.

Witnesses told detectives that they heard the two talking outside the home. The conversation turned to an argument, according to a press release. Sheriff's spokeswoman Michele Cash said it's unclear what the two were arguing about.

Witnesses said they heard noises described as "thuds" then seconds later Ross went inside the home to his room.

Ross then approached another roommate and said, "Miller is on the ground and needs to be checked on," according to a press release.

When detectives arrived, they saw Miller and found blood on Miller's clothes and shoes.

Ross was arrested at the home.

The arrest comes less than a year after Ross was accused of hitting another roommate in the head with a brick after an argument.

On April 3, 2017, David Williams was taken to Winter Haven Hospital after suffering cuts to his head.

He told deputies he jumped over a fence after the altercation to avoid Ross.

Ross was charged with aggravated battery, a second degree felony. A hearing in that case is scheduled for Jan. 30.
