The sentencing hearing for a man who admits to stabbing his wife to death resumed Monday morning.
Irving Jumping Eagle spent much of his testimony going over hours leading up to his wife’s death and the moment he realized he had stabbed her more than 20 times.
Jumping Eagle also talked about an abusive childhood, struggles with PTSD and addiction, and a volatile and abusive relationship he had with Alicia Jumping Eagle.
The defense is trying to prove Alicia provoked Irving the night of her death. Irving says on that night, Alicia stabbed him first and he retaliated. He says he doesn’t remember doing that and that he only remembers seeing her body on the floor, and realizing he was holding a bloody knife.
The state doesn’t believe Irving was provoked, and pointed out he only had one stab wound while Alicia had 25 stab wounds. When the prosecutor questioned him further, she asked him if he ever called 911 or for help before he left the scene and state. He said, 'No.'
The state also pointed out even though Irving claims he can’t remember stabbing Alicia, he was able to recall several specific details about what happened before and after the stabbing that night. The state is asking Judge Mark Salter to sentence Irving Jumping Eagle to life in prison. His defense is asking him for a lighter sentence that would someday allow him to get out on parole.
