Orange juice to SOAR in price as Hurricane Irma damage sees Florida production plummet

PRICES of orange juice will soar by 25 per cent after Hurricane Irma destroyed hundreds of crops in Florida.

Hurricane Irma has ruined crop across the Sunshine State

With the Sunshine State now set to produce its smallest crop since 1945, it is feared thousands of Brits may be forced to pay more of their favourite breakfast drink.

Frozen orange concentrate’s price now costs £1,600 a tonne after the vicious storm ripped through the southern US state in September.

Rabobank beverage analyst Andres Padilla said: “The fact Florida is having such a problem with production and Brazil will probably have a smaller crop means supply will probably decline faster than demand, so prices will trend higher.”

Hurricane Irma caused havoc as it traveled through Florida with winds reaching 100 miles per hour.

More than 75 people died and at least $100billion (£74billion) of damage is expected to have been done.

More than 1.5 million people in South Florida were left without power.

As well as the problems caused by hurricane damage, the orange crop are also suffering from citrus greening disease.

Once a tree is infected with the deadly disease there is no cure and can devastate millions of acres of crop.

Oranges from infected rest are green, misshapen and bitter and unsuitable for sale as fresh fruit or as juice.

Mr Padilla added: “The cure to citrus greening has failed to arrive which has meant Florida's production has kept coming down.

“There is also pressure on the price of land because Florida is the preferred state for retirement in America and there is a lot of demand for building new golf courses and condominiums.”

Donald Trump called the hurricane “a monster” after it hit the state.

The President approved £11.37billion ($15billion) of funds to help aid recovery from the storm.

Residents and businesses could apply for grants for temporary housing, home repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.

The federal government also had to release billions of dollars to reimburse counties for emergency protective measures including evacuation and sheltering costs, as well as most of the costs for debris removal.
