Icelandic regulator names Mila as universal services provider

The Icelandic Post and Telecom Administration (PTA) has named Mila as the universal service provider until 31 December 2020, with the option of an extension until 31 December 2022. Mila has an obligation to provide homes and permanent workplaces to the public electronic communications network, and bear costs of up to ISK 650,000 excluding VAT for each local loop.

In the opinion of the PTA, it is not justified for a universal service provider to provide a connection to the public telecommunications network in municipalities where there is sufficient supply of such connections by another party. Mila is exempt from its USO obligations in boroughs where the local network has at least 90 percent reach to homes and business, and in boroughs where connectivity to Mila’s network has fallen below 50 percent.
