Belagavi: Activists of various
dalit organizations showed black flags to Union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship,
Anantkumar Hegde and attempted to gherao his car at
Channamma Circle here on Monday, condemning his statement on the Constitution. The Dalit activists also raised slogans against Hegde.
Hegde was scheduled to hold a meeting with booth-level
BJP workers at Kannada Sahitya Bhavan near Channamma Circle. As Dalit activists marched towards Hegde's car, police took them into custody.
Hegde has taken the responsibility of two assembly constituencies —
Gokak represented by cooperative minister
Ramesh Jarkiholi and
Belagavi (North) represented by
Firoz Sait.
Speaking to reporters after attending a closed-door meeting, Hegde said that party will win both the constituencies and come to power with a full mandate. However, he did not respond to queries on the recent happenings in
Uttara Kannada district.
Hedge earned the wrath of Dalit activists after his alleged statement on changing the Constitution. Following the outcry, he apologized, but stated that his statement was twisted.
