Man found dead in Rajshahi pond

Body of a fisherman was found floating in a pond on Sunday at Sonadanga Porabeel area under Paba upazila of Rajshahi district two days after his going missing following a police chase.

The deceased was identified as Mokbul Hossain, 45, son of late Shamsul Haque of Volabaria area under Shah Makhdum Police station area in Rajshahi.

Talking to The Daily Observer, a local fisherman said that Mokbul and three others went to the drug peddler Ayub Ali’s house in Sonadanga Porabeel area for drinking liquor in the evening on January 5.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a raid in the area and arrested two drunks, while Mokbul fled away and jumped into a pond. But police could not follow him ultimately, and went away.

On Sunday, his family found the sandal of Mokbul on the pond’s bank and informed the fire service members who recovered the body from the pond, he added.

Paba Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Parimal Kumar Chakrabarty said that the body was handed over to the family without any autopsy as per the family’s demand. While asking about the chase of police, he said that he knows nothing in this regard.
