This Test summary: Day-1 and Day-2 : 560 runs and 22 wickets  Day-3: Washed out Day-4 (First two sessions) : 147 runs and 15 wickets

  • Umang Pabari, Cricket statistician

India losing seven wkts under 100 runs in each inning of a Test match:   56/7 and 80/7 against Australia, Brisbane, 1947 51/7 and 66/7 against England, Manchester, 1952 28/7 and 66/7 against New Zealand, Hyderabad, 1969 74/7 and 40/7 against South Africa, Durban, 1996 68/7 and 70/7 against England, Oval, 2014 92/7 and 82/7 against South Africa, Cape Town, 2018 *

  • After 29 overs,India 82/7 ( Ravichandran Ashwin 1 , ) South Africa have bounced back in the match and how! Seven wickets in the session and the Proteas have put themselves in a superb position. The last over before tea is a wicket maiden.

  • OUT! India lose their seventh wicket. 15 wickets have fell in the last two sessions. Rabada pitches it up and swings it in. Saha was caught off guard and got pinged on the pad. The umpire raises the finger and Saha reviews. Pitched outside off, impact on middle and it would just brushed the leg stump. Umpire's call and the decision stays.  Saha lbw b Rabada 8(19)

  • Umang Pabari, Cricket statistician

The highest target successfully chased by India in a Test in Australia/England/New Zealand/South Africa is 230 which they chased it against Australia at Adelaide in 2003.

South Africa made a roaring comeback in this session. 5-run partnership between Ashwin and Saha but more importantly they have stemmed the fall of wickets. Victory still 126 runs away, seems too distant for India from here...

  • After 28 overs,India 82/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 8 , Ravichandran Ashwin 1) Full delivery, outside off, Ashwin offers no shot. The second ball is on the off stump, Ashwin goes forward to defend. The third ball moves away after pitching. Ashwin covers the line and leaves it alone. Faf has a word with Philander. He is not happy with his lengths and asks to bowl him full, I feel. But Ashwin sees the last three balls easily.

  • Such a fine spell of bowling by Pro

  • After 27 overs,India 82/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 8 , Ravichandran Ashwin 1) Poor shot selection from R Ashwin. Plays away from his body and chases a wide delivery. Unneeded. He defends the fourth ball to deep point.

  • After 26 overs,India 81/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 8 , Ravichandran Ashwin 0) Five dots and a boundary. India are going to consume many of them in this little phase of play before tea. These two need to stick around if India are to win this game; chances are that the pitch will ease out in the final session with the pitch baking under the sun.

  • Umang Pabari, Cricket statistician

Vernon Philander has now taken 44 wickets at Newlands, Captain in Tests which is the fourth most by any bowler at the venue. Dale Steyn holds the record of taking most wickets at Newlands in Tests. He has taken 67 wickets from 14 Tests at the venue.

  • FOUR! Philander bowls it on the stumps. Saha moves a little and flicks it aerially over midwicket.

  • After 25 overs,India 77/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 4 , Ravichandran Ashwin 0) This match has had so many ebbs and flows. Tremendous advertisement for Test cricket. Rabada bowls his first maiden. Ashwin has played a few good innings for India in Tests but this is a different ball game. This is against South Africa in South Africa. But he will have to bat of his skin here to steer India out of trouble along with Saha.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist in Cape Town

Poor batting since Virat got out... Rohit and Pandya playing some poor strokes. More expected from Pandya after that first innings. Even more expected from Rohit since he was dropped. Can India even last till tea?

  • OUT! This is getting far too early, I am afraid. India have lost their sixth wicket. The first innings hero Hardik Pandya falls for 1. Rabada bowls a length ball, around off, Pandya lunges forward to defend and edges it. ABD at gully takes a good catch to his right. The mood is improving in the South African camp. Dejected faces in the Indian dressing room.  Hardik Pandya c de Villiers b Rabada 1(5)

  • After 24 overs,India 77/5 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 4 , Hardik Pandya 1) Hardik Pandya comes out to bat after Rohit Sharma's dismissal. And he almost edges the fifth ball. Length ball, outside off, Pandya tries to defend but the ball goes past his outside edge. He taps a short of a length ball to point for a single and opens his account.

Rohit gone now... 13th wicket of the day so far. India cannot blame the pitch unlike South Africa. That was poor shot selection from Rohit, despite the drop. It is starting to look a but doubtful for India now. 132 needed still and not a frontline batsman remaining.

  • OUT! Needless. This is the quintessential Rohit Sharma shot. He could've left this delivery, which outside off and on a length, completely alone. But he poked at it and chopped on. This is a terrible, terrible shot. India five down and need 132 runs more.  Rohit b Philander 10(30)

  • After 23 overs,India 76/4 ( Rohit Sharma 10 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 4) Chance put down! Rohit tries to pull a short ball on his front foot in South Africa! Terrible shot but Maharaj at deep square leg makes a mess of it. He couldn't even get his fingertips to the cherry. India collect a single on that delivery. Saha hits a boundary on the fifth ball.

  • FOUR! Saha, off the mark. Leans onto it and crunches it through cover.

  • After 22 overs,India 71/4 ( Rohit Sharma 9 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 0) This could probably be the match changing over. Kohli's wicket is as huge as it gets. Wriddhiman Saha comes out to bat and defends his first two deliveries.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist in Cape Town

Surprisingly... Saha in at no.6. This makes no sense. India have a standing policy when they have five batsmen. Going agains that. Not sure Saha is adept at playing Philander here. Plants his front foot too across... this could be ugly.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist in Cape Town

Virat and Rohit were chugging along nicely... and the stand is broken... Huuuuge wicket that... you can add a few more UUUUs.... its that important. Rohit's role becomes more vital now.

  • After 22 overs,India 71/4 ( Rohit Sharma 9 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 0)

  • OUT! How big is this wicket? Philander wasn't looking at his best in the previous over but has handed a big blow to the Indians. Kohli shuffles across to this length ball, looking to flick but missed it completely to get rapped on the pad. Kohli reviews wonder why because it looked plumb and HawkEye confirms that.  Kohli lbw b Philander 28(40)

  • After 21 overs,India 71/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 28 , Rohit Sharma 9) Afraid the South African pacers have begun to tire out. Rabada comes back. Kagiso concedes a single on the fifth ball. Five off it.

  • FOUR! Rabada slides down the leg side and Kohli glances it fine.

  • After 20 overs,India 66/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 23 , Rohit Sharma 9) This is interesting. The bounce seems to have disappeared in Cape Town. QDK was collecting deliveries with his fingers pointing skywards but had to crouch to collect a couple of balls in this ball. Even the sixth delivery hardly bounced.

  • After 19 overs,India 65/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 22 , Rohit Sharma 9) Rohit mistimes a pull on the fourth ball and collects two. Kohli wanted three but Rohit was slow on the second run. Rohit helps the fifth ball to fine leg for another run. Another single off the final ball to fine leg. These two are slowly but gradually rebuilding the Indian innings.

  • After 18 overs,India 61/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 21 , Rohit Sharma 6) Philander comes back into the attack. No sign of Maharaj as of yet but Faf would've introduce him into the attack at some moment in time. These pacers can't bowl continuously. One run in the over.

  • After 17 overs,India 60/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 21 , Rohit Sharma 5) Morkel continuing another over. Kohli looks well settled now. Leaving the balls with some confidence. However he did get beaten off the fifth ball. Whenever there is a ball to hit, he is able to get proper connection as he does take a couple of the last ball of the over.

  • FOUR! Half-volley by Morkel and Kohli plants his foot and drives it supremely through the covers.

  • After 16 overs,India 54/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 15 , Rohit Sharma 5) Rabada to bowl his fourth over. Rohit defends the third delivery on the off side for a single. Kohli does the same to square leg. Two runs in the over.

  • After 15 overs,India 52/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 14 , Rohit Sharma 4) Morkel continues. Four dots followed by two runs and a single. India have crossed the 50-run mark.

  • Oh, that would be lovely and reassuring.

  • After 14 overs,India 49/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 12 , Rohit Sharma 3) Kohli makes Rabada pay for a bad ball and takes a single off the third delivery. Rohit defends the fourth ball so well that it goes down the ground easily. Cover fielder gives it a chase and India run three. Kohli takes another brace to the same area on the final delivery.

  • FOUR! Bad delivery. Rabada goes too straight and around leg, Kohli shuffles across and tickles it to the fine leg fence.

  • As big as his double centuries in ODI cricket are

  • After 13 overs,India 39/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 5 , Rohit Sharma 0) Another wicket maiden. India faltering at the moment. But really any batsman would've got out to that delivery from Morkel. Rohit makes his way out to the centree. After playing three balls safely, he goes for a pull on the last only to miss it completely.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist in Cape Town

Pujara gone... he wanted to chase 350 here. India are now 39/3. 208 is an uphill task. Make no mistake after this.

  • Ripper!

  • OUT! What a delivery! Pujara gone for 4. That delivery was nearly unplayable. Length delivery angled in, Pujara goes to defend and it moves away after pitching to take the outside edge. QDK grabs it comfortably. India three down.  Pujara c de Kock b Morne Morkel 4(13)

  • After 12 overs,India 39/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 4 , Virat Kohli (C) 5) The over starts with a boundary. On the third ball, Kohli pats on towards cover and immediately sets off for a single. Pujara scampers and dives to make his ground. A direct hit and Pujara would've been gone. Six off the over.

  • FOUR! Outside off, Kohli decides to play at it and it goes off the outer half of the bat to the third man fence.

  • After 11 overs,India 33/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 3 , Virat Kohli (C) 0) Philander to Pujara. South Africa would want Kohli on strike against Philander given the Indian captain's weakness outside off. Pujara gets opened up on the fourth delivery and edges it past gully. Brace taken.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist in Cape Town

Rabada now... and an incoming snorter to Virat first up... feel like he will have a definitive say on this game. Alternately, Virat needs to walk the talk here. Quite expressive in the field... and clever with his bowling changes... he needs to come good here in testing conditions. Order popcorn if you are watching this!

  • After 10 overs,India 31/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 1 , Virat Kohli (C) 0) Kagiso Rabada comes into the attack. Pujara takes a single to fine leg to bring Kohli on strike. Kohli sees out the rest of the over safely.

  • After 9 overs,India 30/2 ( Cheteshwar Pujara 0 , Virat Kohli (C) 0) Two wickets in two overs. South Africa have sent both the Indian openers back to the hut. The South African fans are starting to find their voices once again. A wicket maiden.

  • Chetan Narula, Freelance cricket journalist in Cape Town

Vijay gone. Dismissal was on the cards.... beauty spell from Philander consistently shaping it away from the right hander... and now with Virat facing, Faf would want to keep bowling him for another 5-6 spells... a longish spell. 30/2... game on this!

India vs South Africa, 1st Test, Day 4 in Cape Town, latest update: South Africa have bounced back in the match and how! Seven wickets in the session and the Proteas have put themselves in a superb position. The last over before tea is a wicket maiden.
