Hunt feeling let down by experienced campaigners

2018-01-08 12:28

Cape Town - Wits head coach Gavin Hunt is disappointed by the failure of players like Daine Klate, Elias Pelembe and Thulani Hlatshwayo to score this season.

Wingers Klate and Pelembe have lit up the Absa Premiership over the years with their goal-scoring abilities, while central defender and captain Hlatshwayo has also been a regular name on the score-sheet over the past couple of seasons.

But as the defending champions find themselves floundering at the foot of the table, the three aforementioned players have failed to contribute a single goal.

"The problem is Daine Klate hasn't scored one goal this season and he normally gets eight a season," Hunt said after a 0-1 home defeat to Free State Stars.

"Tyson (Hlatshwayo) hasn't scored one and he gets four or five a season. Buhle (Mkhwanazi) is four or five a season, but hasn't scored. Pelembe hasn't scored one goal.

"These are people who score goals for us and have been doing so for the last 10 years in the league.

"That's got to tell you something," he continued. "Then in other areas, we haven't had goals from anybody.

"Daine is a bit older now. The game doesn't stand still and neither does time. He had two chances in the first half, one was an open goal and he could have headed it in, but he controlled it with his chest.

"Those are the type of chances he has been scoring all his life, but isn't this season."

The Students are next in action on Wednesday night when they host Hunt's former club, SuperSport United.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
