Golden Globes 2018: Three Billboards was a big winner

The big news this morning is that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has won the lion’s share of the top film trophies.

The drama took Best Motion Picture (Drama), while Frances McDormand swept Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama) and Sam Rockwell won Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.

Golden Globes voters also rewarded Martin McDonagh for the film’s screenplay.

Elsewhere there were two wins for Lady Bird, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), and Saoirse Ronan for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy).

Allison Janney’s role in I, Tonya earned her Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, while James Franco won Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for The Disaster Artist.

Best Director went to The Shape of Water’s Guillermo del Toro, while Gary Oldman’s turn as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama).

Coco won Best Motion Picture (Animated) and In The Fade took Best Motion Picture (Foreign Language), while This Is Me from The Greatest Showman took Best Original Song and Alexandre Desplat’s work from The Shape of Water was enough to scoop Best Original Score.

Oprah Winfrey won the Cecil B. DeMille award and gave a speech that has been widely lauded.

Snubs included Dunkirk, Call Me By Your Name and Get Out, which all left empty handed.

The Post also notably went unrewarded, along with Phantom Thread - Daniel Day-Lewis’s final role.

The BAFTAs will be the next big awards ceremony to keep an eye on - the nominations for that, as well as the new host, will be announced tomorrow.

Oscars then follow on March 4.
