India fight their way back into the Test as they bowl out South Africa for just 130 in the second innings. The hosts resumed proceedings, after a washed out Day 3, at 65/2 and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Mohammed Shami (3/28) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/39) did the early damage and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/33) too returned with two wickets in what was a brilliant morning session for the visitors. For the Proteas, only two entered double digits on Day 4 as others struggled against the moving ball. It was a lone battle AB de Villiers fought and his fighting 35 could only take the lead to 207. It’s game on at Newlands and a lively pitch means it won’t be an easy task to score runs against the likes of Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada. Dale Steyn won’t come out to ball but South Africa’s attack still wears a very dangerous look. Catch live scores and updates of India vs South Africa Live Cricket Score in 1st Test Day 4.
India vs South Africa, Live Cricket Score, 1st Test, Day 4: 1701 hrs IST: Runs are coming for India at the moment as Dhawan and Vijay take the total to 24/0 after six overs. Openers will hold key in a chase like this and it’s important these two hang around
1645 hrs IST: Vijay shuffles a long way across and fails to put bat and ball. The fielders and bowler go up and umpire raises his finger. Vijay chats with Dhawan and goes for the DRS. Replays suggest ball would have gone over the stumps. Kohli is certainly pumped as his opener survives in the 208-run chase. India 2/0
1639 hrs IST: No Asian team has won a Test at Newlands. If India manage to score the required 208 runs, they will create history
1635 hrs IST: India openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay walk out for the chase, Vernon Philander to commence proceedings with the shining cherry
1556 hrs IST: ALL OVER! AB goes big but finds Bhuvi, who takes a brilliant catch near the ropes. South Africa are bundled out for 130 and have set India a 208-run target. Top bowling effort by India. Bumrah and Shami picked three wickets each and got able support from Pandya and Bhuvi. Lunch has been taken and India will shortly come out for the exciting chase
1550 hrs IST: WICKET! Nasty bouncer from Bhuvi and Morkel presents an easy catch to Saha behind the stumps. The stumper has now taken 10 catches in the match. South Africa nine down and Styen walks out to bat
1543 hrs IST: Morne Morkel comes out to bat but all eyes pan towards South Africa dressing room as Dale Steyn puts the pads on. The seamer has been ruled out of the series due to an injury but will come out to bat today
1540 hrs IST: EDGE AND GONE! Bhuvi bowls at the right length, in the right corridor, to find Maharaj’s edge. Saha completes a regulation catch, his ninth in the match so far, and South Africa in real trouble at 122/8
1536 hrs IST: Double change as Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes into the attack
1531 hrs IST: Change in the bowling as Kohli brings Pandya into the attack. The seamer scalped both openers in quick succession in the second innings and would be looking to send the dangerous AB back
1524 hrs IST: Maharaj flicks one to the deep and brings up the 100 for South Africa. The hosts now lead by 177 runs and have three wickets in hand
1514 hrs IST: Maharaj walks out to bat and he has some work to do with AB. The lead is only 172 and the Indian seamers have been breathing fire in the morning session. The rain has spiced up the pitch and the bowlers have made full use of the conditions on offer
1512 hrs IST: WICKET! Top spell this from Shami as he now sends Philander back to the hut for a duck. The ball came back sharply into the right-hander and trapped him in front. South Africa struggling at 95/7
1508 hrs IST: India need to keep a check on the South African tail because it can wag. Philander, Maharaj, Steyn had scores of 23, 35, 16 in the first innings respectively. It’s still not sure whether injured Steyn will come out to bat
1505 hrs IST: Not releasing pressure is the key for India now. In the first innings, they had South Africa under pump but the lower-order scored some crucial runs to take the total over the 250-run mark. With South Africa struggling at 94/6, it has been India all the way so far
1502 hrs IST: Seamers have given India a brilliant start today. The hosts have lost three wickets and have failed to make much addition to their overnight total. The visitors are charged up and will be looking for AB de Villiers’ wicket now
1458 hrs IST: GONE! TROUBLE! South Africa are six down and in all sorts of trouble now with Quinton de Kock walking back. Full length from Bumrah and De Kock goes for the drive outside the line with the ball moving back in. Takes the inside edge behind to Saha. Umpire says no. Kohli immediately reviews and UltraEdge confirms that it did take the bat. South Africa are 92/6, lead by 169 runs
1444 hrs IST: GONE! Splendid delivery by Jasprit Bumrah. Gets the ball to angle in and it moves away at a late stage to leave Faf with little to do. All he could muster was a defensive stroke and it takes the glove behind to Saha. What a ball! Warning signs too with the ball jumping up into the batsman. South Africa are 82/5 and lead by 159 runs
1433 hrs IST: New man with the ball, Jasprit Bumrah, gets plenty from the surface early on. Gets the ball to pitch and move into AB de Villiers with the South African batsman trying to defend. Gets an outside edge which falls short of Saha. Indian players were excited but it may have taken the forearm instead of the glove.
1428 hrs IST: GONE! This time it falls kindly for Virat Kohli. Wild celebrations by the Indian skipper. Rabada walks back and it was coming. Opened the face of the bat a touch and it is a comfortable take for Kohli in front of first slip
1427 hrs IST: Rabada, already getting rattled here by deliveries outside off by Shami, has a strong go at it but ends up edging behind to Rohit Sharma. Falls just short of the second slip fielder
1410 hrs IST: GONE! Fantastic start for India. Amla walks back for 4 with Rohit Sharma taking a low catch as Shami strikes. Amla tried to punch a rising short of length delivery but failed to keep it down. Went towards Rohit in the gully region and the Mumbaikar plucks a smart one. The soft decision is OUT. Third umpire takes his time on it by assessing multiple angles. And it is out! SA 66/3
1400 hrs IST: Right we get underway in Cape Town. Nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada alongside Hashim Amla to resume from 65/2 with a 142 run lead. India need an early wicket to get the pressure going straight away. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the ball, two slips and a gully in place. A maiden to start things
1340 hrs IST: Worth wondering which way the Test is balanced when the first ball is bowled. Going by close of play on Day 2, South Africa had the upper hand. By going by close of play on Day 3, it looks even. Rain may just change things in India’s favour but one thing that is definitely going to work in their favour is the injury to Dale Steyn. Fans would be disappointed to see Steyn ruled out of the series, but it comes as a bright spot for the Indian team
1315 hrs IST: We won’t be starting early but the sessions will be longer to bowl 98 overs each on the upcoming two days. The breakdown for sessions: 10h30 -12h30 / 13h10 – 15h25 / 15h45 – 18h00 or 18h30 (IST: 2 PM – 4 PM; 4.40 PM – 6.55 PM; 7.15 PM – 9.30 PM or 10 PM)
1300 hrs IST: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the first Test between India and South Africa. The contest is bent in South Africa’s favour as they lead by 142 runs and have eight wickets in hand in the second innings. Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar are back in the pavillion with Hardik Pandya, India’s man of the match so far, taking both wickets. The visitors need plenty from him and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to start the opening session on a bright note – much like the weather in Cape Town today.
