The Lafourche Parish School District could face an additional $3 million in cuts after property tax revenues from last year were 10 percent lower than anticipated.
District Business Manager Don Gaudet told the School Board about the revenue reduction at its meeting last week.
“We’re at a point where we need to think about things differently,” Gaudet said. “Where on the heels of other problems that have left us with no other choice but to cut.”
In October, the board was told the district’s general fund could lose $2.8 million due to a decrease in sales tax revenue.
The district will need to cut the $2.8 million from the budget by the end of the fiscal year on June 30 and $3 million by July 1.
“I just want everyone to understand what’s going on,” Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews said at the board meeting.
The School Board decided May 3 to eliminate positions, including teachers, assistant principals and librarians, after a 1 percent sales tax failed April 29.
The School District had already cut about $3.9 million from its budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year by increasing student-teacher ratios and making program and other cuts.
