Elmer Lee Riemenschneider, age 84, of Rootstown, surrounded by his family, peacefully passed away after a short illness on Saturday, January 6, 2018.
Elmer was born in Rootstown, Ohio on April 16, 1933 to parents Ralph and Flora (Fox) Riemenschneider. Elmer graduated from Rootstown High School with the class of 1953 then went on to serve in the United States Army. After being honorably discharged he began work as a carpenter. He went on to work at Chestnut Ridge Dairy for 17 years until beginning a long career with Rootstown Township as the road supervisor and cemetery sexton retiring in 1996. Elmer was an honorary member of the Rootstown Fire Dept. as a volunteer for 35 years, starting at age 17 while still in high school. He enjoyed sports, fishing, farming and travel but most of all his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elmer was a member of St. Peter of the Fields Church, Council #5173 Knights of Columbus and the Rootstown Historical Society.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley and his children: Elmer Jr. (Linda), James (Sharon), son-in-law Mike Biben, Mark Sr. (Melanie), Laura Snyder, Mike (Angee), Pam (Jeff) Helmling, and Scott (Sue) Riemenschneider. He also leaves his grandchildren: Mark Jr. (Dawn), Shane (Leah), Amy (Nathanael), Karl, Elise, Olivia, Ilana, Eric, Brad (Ann), Melissa, Rachel, Charles, Greg, Brett, Kate, Kim, Jenna, Jayson, Hannah, Amber, Adam, Carlie, Cora and great-grandchildren: Natalie, Tristan, Stewart, Sigmund, Julia, Wyatt, Kierra, Ashton, Desmond, Demi, Bryce, Lucy, Felix, Nathan, Mia and Emily. Surviving also are his sisters: Blanch (Carl) Taylor, Freda Riemenschneider, Hazel McEwen, Norma Sands and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elmer was proceeded in death by his parents, sisters Bertha Shull and Mable Lansinger, brothers Paul and Russell, his daughter Barbara Biben and his granddaughter Jessica Riemenschneider.
Friends and family will be received at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St. Ravenna, on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 4 until 6 p.m. and again on Thursday, January 11, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by Rev. David Misbrener at St. Peter of the Fields Church, 3487 Old Forge Rd., Rootstown, Ohio. Interment will follow at St. Peter of the Fields Cemetery.
