Pregnant woman dies as hospital lacks facilities

The terminally ill health system in the State took life of a pregnant woman in the provisional State capital on Sunday.

Twenty-two-year old Vandana, wife of Hemraj, was expecting her first baby. The poor family resides at Indira Gandhi Marg in Niranjanpur area and the husband Hemraj works as a help in a shop selling electrical appliances.

On January 5, Vandana in her ninth month of pregnancy was taken to the Female wing of the Government Doon Medical College hospital with complaint of fever and respiratory problem.

The family members allege that the doctors there ignored their requests to allow them to take the patient to another hospital. On Saturday night, the condition of Vandana deteriorated after which the doctors told them that as the hospital don’t have maternity ICU, they should take the patient to some private centre. “When we asked them to refer the patient, they refused but instead asked us to take the patient to another hospital where ICU is there.

On late night we took the patient to two prominent private hospitals but in one of them ICU was not available while in another, the doctor was not there. We finally took her to a private clinic where she was put on ventilator. On Sunday morning she expired. We were excited about the arrival of a new member in the family but now the mother and baby in womb are no more,’’ said brother of Hemraj.

The family members claim that on January 2, the hospital report showed Haemoglobin at 8 while on January 5, the report showed Haemoglobin at 12.5. They argue that either of two reports is wrong.

A remorseful Hemraj said that the life of mother and child to be would have been saved had better medical facility been available to Vandana.
