Police yesterday arrested one of the nine accused in the case for killing two college students at Shahpara in Haluaghat upazila headquarters under the district on Saturday.
The arrestee is Nahid, 30, a local.
Retired college teacher Md Mujibur Rahman, father of Hasan Mohammad Shahrier, 21, one of the slain students, filed the murder case yesterday noon, said Md Kamrul Islam Miah, OC of Haluaghat Police Station.
Shahrier was studying at Mymensingh Homeopathic College while Robbani Sourav, 22, son of Anwar Hossain of Shahpara, was a degree student of Haluaghat Shaheed Smriti College.
Two groups of local youths had an altercation over playing badminton at Shahpara Friday evening and arbitration was arranged to settle the matter on Saturday evening, the OC quoted locals as saying.
“During the arbitration, two groups locked in a heated exchange around 7:30pm and at one stage, some people allegedly led by Akash, 22, a college student, started indiscriminate stabbing, leaving Shahrier, Sourav, and Shunya, 20, badly injured.
“Doctors at Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex declared Shahrier and Sourav dead,” the OC said.
