Addict kills fifth wife for dowry, sent to jail

A drug addict who allegedly killed his wife in the town early Saturday was sent to jail yesterday.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court sent Sagor Hossain, 25, of town's Charpara Kopikhet area, to jail when police produced him before it, police said.

Sub-Inspector Abdul Khaleque of Kotwali Police Station said Sagor used to torture his wife Safia Akhter, 20, for dowry since their marriage four months ago.

Safia, fifth wife of Sagor, was daughter of Nowab Ali of village Mirkandapara in Sadar upazila, said Khaleque, also investigation officer (IO) of the case. He said Sagor's four other wives left him due to torture.

At one stage of altercation over dowry, Sagor beat up Safia mercilessly at their Charpara Kopikhet residence early Saturday, said the IO.

Critically injured Safia was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) where the doctors declared her dead.

Sagor was arrested on Saturday morning as he returned home with Safia's body after the locals informed police about the matter.

Police sent the body to MMCH morgue for autopsy.

Safia's mother Mozina Akhter lodged a murder case with Kotwali Police Station accusing Sagor and his mother Monwara Khatun Monu. Monwara is still at large.

Sagor is wanted by Kotwali police for selling and using drugs, police said.
