Although police officials said 8,324 challans for drunk driving is quite worrying and it is not possible for the department to set up checkpoints every day to curb this menace which poses risk not only to the drivers but to others on the roads as well.

According to the information, around 1,214 accidents took place on the city roads in 2017 in which 481 persons lost their lives. Most of the mishaps took place due to rash driving, over speeding and while crossing the road. The data also reveals that two-wheeler drivers were responsible for most of the traffic violations, be it rash driving, jumping red lights or riding sans helmet. Mostly, the people on two-wheelers were also the victims of mishaps.

“To curb the traffic violence in the city we have been organising special drives from time to time. We have put several checkpoints have issued clear order to the traffic personnel to be present on the roads and curb traffic violations, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) traffic,” Heera Singh, said.

Officials said normally the Gurugram Traffic Police and area police stations on an average issue spot fines to around 3,500 vehicles in a day. However, during the special drives, the number of vehicle challans went upto 21,769.

On Saturday the Gurugram traffic police and all police stations in its jurisdiction observed “Zero Tolerance Day” against traffic violations. The amount of money collected as a penalty was Rs 25,49,600, the police said. In the past few months, city  traffic police have been focusing particularly on offences that cause fatal accidents.

“The traffic police organised awareness rally to spread awareness of traffic rules and regulations. Our traffic cops deployed to catch violators who break rules on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, as maximum accidents take place there. Our main goal is to reduce fatalities on the road,” the ACP added.
