17,036 birds spotted in A’garh forests

| | ATHAGARH | in Bhubaneswar

As per a bird census in the Athagarh Forest Division which concluded on Saturday, 17,036 birds were found in 67 wetlands, including the Ansupa lake.

The census was conducted from Mahanadi east belt starting from Narasinghpur to Mundali.

About 2,694 birds in Khuntuni, 5,870 in Athagarh, 4,608 in Badamba, 1,870 in Narsinghpur  (east) and 1,994 birds in Narsinghpur  (west) forest range were spotted, informed DFO Arun Kumar Swain. Species like Chakor, Chakoi, Hansarali, Gendalia were  mostly found. No migratory bird was found in any of the wetland, the DFO informed.

He told this paper that due to rising weeds in the Ansupa lake, the avian species do not find it suitable for them.

The number of birds counted this year was less in comparison to last year's number of 19,476.

Ornithologist Jhulan Kishor Bhakta said that not only due to weeds in the Ansupa lake, but also due to rampant poaching, frequent unauthorised blasting in the nearby Saranda hills and noisy surrounding because of congregation of thousands of tourists in winter here, the avian guests skip the lake.
