More than 3,000 tons of water flows per second over the falls, but the magical photos appear to show the Horseshoe Falls frozen in time, as they glitter covered in a thick layer of ice and snow.

Icicles hang from the railings around the Falls, and piles of snow gather like cotton.

Many commenters on social media have likened the scenes to something out of Narnia.

Wind chills in the area have fallen to as low as -14C, according to the National Weather Service.

Tourists and locals alike have braced the bone-chilling temperatures and flocked to the area to see the incredible sight.

And it’s unlikely the Falls will thaw anytime soon - freezing conditions are expected to remain through the rest of the week.

The East Coast has had little respite from the freezing conditions since Storm Grayson became a “bomb cyclone” plunging the country to -35C, wth a whopping 18 inches of snow in some parts.

The weather service has issued wind chill warnings for parts of Vermont, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Maine and New Hampshire.

The wind chill factor is to make it feel like a shocking -75C in the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

“This is a crippling snow event,” Zach Sefcovic, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland, said last week.

Forecasters are warning people to be wary of hypothermia and frostbite from the freeze blast that’s gripping a large swath of the nation, from the Midwest to the Northeast. 

Weathers observers say frostbite can set in as quickly as 30 seconds. 

The prolonged, dangerous cold weather has sent homeless charities scrambling to get people off the streets and to bring in extra beds for them.

Animals charities are urging people to remember their pets and not leave them outside.

Janice Thomson, Chair of Niagara Parks Commission commented that although the Falls look frozen, water is still flowing below the ice,

She said: "You can stand there and you hear the roar of the water, you feel the power of it and then you hear ice cracking. It's beautiful to stand there and listen to it.

"With less water going over the falls, there is greater opportunity for ice to build up, giving the appearance of 'frozen falls’.”
