The second session of the Chittagong University (CU) Annual Theatre Festival concluded on Thursday amid fanfare and festivity in the campus.
CU Dramatics Department organised the festival at university campus from December 2-4 for the second time.
The three-day festival featured staging of plays, music, recitation, dance, theatrical performance and folk songs.
A total of nine plays were staged on each day from afternoon to evening. On Tuesday (January 4), renowned Indian Sanskrit playwright Bhasa's “Madhyama-vyayog” was staged by the students of Dramatics Department which was directed by Fahmida Sultana while Syed Ahmed's drama “Protidin Ekdin” was staged in the evening directed by Imran Hossain Emu.
Three other dramas – “Two Idiots”, “Macbeth” and Captain Hurrah were staged on the following day.
On the last day, “Shada Golape Agun”, “Tobuo Manush” and “Tasher Desh” were staged. The loud rounds of applause during and after the production remained proof of the satisfaction of the full-house audience.
Three theatrical performances – “Dream 1, 2 and 3” were also staged by the students of the Dramatics Department. Documentaries about the Liberation War were also screened at the festival.
CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury inaugurated the festival as chief guest on Tuesday afternoon while renowned poet and journalist Abul Momen was present as honorable guest.
Before the inauguration, the students and teachers of the department brought out a colourful procession. Later, a discussion was held at CU Mukta Mancha where VC Prof Iftekhar expressed his hope that theatre activists can change the conventional society through their stage performance as it has huge influence on audience.
CU Pro VC Professor Shireen Akhter, Arts and Humanities Faculty Dean Professor Sekandar Chowdhury, first chairperson of CU Dramatics Department Professor Kazi Mostain Billah, Chairman of Dramatics Department Ashim Das also addressed the inaugural ceremony among others.
The festival concluded on Thursday (January 4) with a colourful cultural programme.
