Gammadda: Wawen Wewata – pushing through dangers to protect Sri Lanka’s hydraulic heritage

Sri Lanka – the once ‘Granary of the East’ is today waiting with baited breath for the arrival of ships containing Rice and Fertilizer.

What does this mean for Sri Lanka? – will we have to wait for drinking water from another country in the future?

Triggering this chain of thought, News 1st launched Gammadda: Gamin Gamata, Wawen Wewata national program.

It is no secret that we at News 1st are sensitive to the issues of our Sri Lankan people.

Thus, we have been travelling around the country over the past few years along with the general public.

Why? – To resolve burning issues facing rural communities through the Gammadda initiative.

During our journey from village to village, we identified that water is one of the main problems that is affecting a majority of the country’s population.

Considering that we engaged in practices that did not allow wastage of a single drop of water, what are the circumstances that led to this situation?

During our journey, we identified that the destruction of ‘Ellangawa’, in other words the ‘Wewa systems’ as the main cause for this issue.
