Joe Root, the England captain, will not resume his innings on the final morning of the Ashes series but is likely to bat at some point on day five of the fifth Test at the SCG after suffering severe dehydration.
Root was hospitalised with diarrhoea and vomiting after being in the thick of oppressive temperatures for much of Sunday (January 7). Sydney reached a peak of 42 degrees, while the southern suburb of Penrith reached a record-setting 47 degrees. A heat stress tracker showed temperatures hitting 57.6 degrees in the middle of the SCG at one point.
England's faint hopes of salvaging a draw seemingly hinges on Root, who is 42 not out as the tourists are still 210 runs behind and on the cusp of a 4-0 series defeat.
