Jobless rate in Lenawee County declines

ADRIAN — Unemployment dropped in November in Lenawee County as more people found work.

The county’s jobless rate of 3.9 percent in November was 0.4 percentage point less than October’s 4.3 percent, according to information released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives within the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget.

“In November, typical seasonal employment changes were recorded in Southern Michigan,” Leonidas Murembya, state coordinator of regional economic research, said in a report. “Businesses in leisure and hospitality services continued to cut jobs, but hiring started to pick up in retail trade to prepare for the holidays season.”

Lenawee County had 300 more people working in November than in October while the number of unemployed dropped by 175. The labor force grew by 125.

Compared to November 2016, unemployment in Lenawee County was 0.4 point higher, the report said. The labor force is down by 250, there are 450 fewer people working and 200 more people without jobs.

In the Southeast Michigan Prosperity Region, which includes Lenawee County, the unemployment rate in November was 3.4 percent. The other counties in the region are Monroe, Hillsdale, Washtenaw, Jackson and Livingston.

Counties neighboring Lenawee County saw declines in their jobless rates from October to November. Hillsdale County was down 0.3 point to 4.2 percent, Jackson was down 0.2 to 4.1 percent, Washtenaw was down 0.3 to 3.1 percent, and Monroe was down 1.1 points to 3.9 percent.

“November unemployment rates declined slightly in the state’s southern areas, and rose seasonally in the northern regions,” Jason Palmer, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives, said in a news release. “Jobless rates in most regions in Michigan were up marginally since November 2016. However, unemployment rates throughout the state have been low in 2017.”

Statewide, the unemployment rate in November was 4 percent, a 0.2 point improvement from October. The jobless rate in November 2016 also was 4.2 percent.
