Foot chase through Walmart ends in phony prescriptions arrest

Suspect from Tampa was using legitimate doctor's information as source for fraudulent prescriptions.

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — A Tampa man attempting to fill phony prescriptions was arrested Saturday in Walton County.

DeFuniak Springs Police Department reported in a press release that officers were notified Saturday morning of several fraudulent prescriptions called into local pharmacies. A Walmart pharmacist advised that they received a call from a purported office assistant requesting a prescription in the name of an elderly man for promethazine with codeine. Additionally, the caller requested a “Z pack” and gave information for a legitimate doctor in Madison.

The pharmacist was suspicious and contacted the doctor to verify. The doctor denied knowing the patient and was unfamiliar with requesting the medications. Officers took a report from Walmart and later from Winn-Dixie for the same type incident.

Officers were called at approximately 11:30 a.m. to Walmart in reference to a subject attempting to pickup the fraudulent prescriptions. As officers approached the pharmacy, a black male began running toward the garden center area. He then doubled back and was detained by officers in the middle of the store.

The suspect was identified as 31-year-old Wesley Alaster Harper. A search revealed a fake driver’s license in the name of a female. Harper refused to answer questions from officers.

Harper was arrested and is being held without bond awaiting first appearance on charges of attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud, possession forged driver's license and resisting officer without violence.
