LACYGNE — The Frontenac High School basketball teams picked up a pair of wins on Friday against Prairie View, as the girls’ team won 59-40 before the boys’ team picked up its first win of the season 69-50.
LADY RAIDERS WIN BY DOUBLE DIGITS
The Lady Raiders got the night started out on the right foot for Frontenact, winning 59-40 in game one of the night.
A quick start for the Lady Raiders gave them an early lead, which they were able to protect down the stretch to earn the win.
FHS took command in the early going and was lifted to a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter by a quick seven points for Taylor Peterson.
Frontenac went on to extend the lead to nine early in the second quarter thanks to four consecutive points scored between Peterson and Jadyn Meyer en route to taking a 26-19 advantage into the break at halftime.
Prairie View came back to within two points of the lead after scoring the first five points of the third quarter, but a 16-0 run by the Lady Raiders pushed the score to 42-24.
The run was highlighted by six points from Bria Ginavan and included four points apiece from Lauren Harper and Karma Fields.
The Raiders went into the fourth quarter holding a 44-30 lead and kept the Buffaloes at bay to earn the win.
FRONTENAC BOYS EARN FIRST WIN
After stumbling out of the gates, the Frontenac boys’ team came through with its first win of the season 69-50.
The Raiders took control in the first half and held off a third-quarter rally by the Buffaloes with a strong finish to earn the win.
Both teams were going back and forth in the opening quarter, with Frontenac holding a slight 19-18 advantage by the end of the first following a jumper by Hayden Pile.
The Buffaloes scored the first bucket of the second quarter to swing the one-point lead in their favor, but an 8-0 run by the Raiders put them back on top at 27-20.
The run was highlighted by four points from Blayne Baldwin and included two points apiece from Ginavan and Jake Beckman.
FHS went on to end the first half with a 36-28 lead, before Prairie View cut the deficit to three with five consecutive points to begin the third quarter.
The Buffalos kept pace with Frontenac and managed to trim the score to 43-42 late in the third quarter, but the Raiders gained momentum in the fourth, scoring the first six points between Cooper Cleland, Baldwin and Ginavan to push the lead to nine.
The Raiders never looked back from there, building the lead to double digits en route to the win.
