Marishka Katrese Brown and David Alan Hewitt are to be married Jan. 7 at the Barn at Bridlewood, an event space in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Rev. Gregory Johnson, a Baptist minister, is to officiate.

Dr. Brown, 36, is a program director at the National Institutes of Health’s National Center on Sleep Disorders Research in Bethesda, Md., where she manages a portfolio of investigators whose primary research focuses on sleep medicine. She graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and received a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

She is a daughter of VieAnna F. Brown and John G. Brown of Hattiesburg.

Dr. Hewitt, 47, is a researcher and policy consultant for environmental management and related public health issues in Philadelphia and a lecturer in biology at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Penn and received a Ph.D. in biology from Harvard.

He is the son of Elinor A. Hewitt of Abington, Pa. and the late Alan D. Hewitt. He is the stepson of Steve Applebaum.

The couple met in 2013 through a mutual friend at Penn, where the bride was a researcher at the medical school.
