PROVIDENCE — Kasper Bjorkqvist scored two goals and Brian Pinho had a goal and two assists as the No. 11 Providence College men’s hockey team surged past Merrimack, 5-2, for its fourth straight victory on Saturday night at Schneider Arena. Hayden Hawkey needed to make only 10 saves for the victory.
The win gives the Friars a 14-7-1 overall record, 7-4-1 in Hockey East, while the Warriors fall to 6-11-3 and 3-7-2.
Brandon Duhaime got the Friars off and running at 7:31 of the first period on a highlight-reel end-to-end rush as he split the Merrimack defense, drew a penalty, and chipped a shot over the glove of Craig Pantano for his fourth goal of the season.
But Merrimack came right back to tie it on a goal by Jared Kolquist and then went ahead on a tally by Ludvig Larsson.
In the second period, Providence tied it at 15:48 on Brian Pinho’s ninth goal of the season. Hawkey’s home-run pass sent Pinho in alone on a breakaway. It was the goaltender’s second career assist. PC went ahead when Jason Bryson found Bjorkqvist streaking down the left wing and he sent a wrist shot through the five-hole of Pantano.
Erik Foley then gave the Friars some insurance as he buried a rebound at the top of the crease for his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Foley leads Hockey East with 15 points in league play (8-7 — 15).
Bjorkqvist notched his second-career multi-goal game with an empty-net goal to seal things with 1:35 to play. The sophomore now has two game-winning goals in his last three games.
