Boozy Brits descend on Lakeside for BDO darts bonanza

THOUSANDS of rowdy Brits packed into the Lakeside Country Club for an evening of boozy BDO Darts madness.

As the World Championships opened last night, around 2,000 revellers crammed into the venue for the action.

And Daily Star Online was there to soak up the atmosphere.

Huge queues were forming by the bars as large groups filled their beer jugs to kickstart the bonanza.

Scores of fans donned fancy dress outfits – from Harry Potter to nuns and air hostesses – before the evening's games started at 7pm.

PARTY: Thousands packed into Lakeside for BDO Darts

“It is the most fun, it is just a really great atmosphere”

Juliette Wreford, dressed as Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter franchise, told Daily Star Online: "I first came here in 2002, and I have been coming here since.

"Every year I just want to get Christmas out of the way to come here.

"It is the most fun, it is just a really great atmosphere and I love all the players."

There was an earlier shock, when favourite Martin "Wolfie" Adams crashed out after losing to Mark McGeeney.

But luckily for darts fans, last year's winner mingled with the crowd by the bar and posed for photos.

True to tradition, people were joining arms during breaks and bellowing out sing-along classics including Tom Jones' Delilah, Sweet Caroline and Agadoo.

There was also a mass chorus of Hey Baby, with people belting out "ooh-ah" at the top of their lungs.

But it wasn't just Brits who crammed into the hotspot.

Jackei Gopdhals, 55, was celebrating the 20th time he has travelled all the way from Eeklo, Belgium, to immerse himself in the fun.

Sporting a hat with a synthetic dart board on it, he told us: "I've come here for 20 years.

"I come from Belgium. I love the darts, it is a fantastic atmosphere.

"I love the Brits. I don't know they love me."

A Denmark flag was also seen being waved in the crowd as the event stakes its claim as one of the most enjoyable in the business worldwide.

And a large number of people there last night insist that it is, believing it to far better the PDC Darts at Alexandra Palace earlier this month.

Jimmy Rughers, 38, dressed as Ron Weesley from Harry Potter, said: "I have been coming here five years, it is the home of darts.

"Alley Pally is great but this is where it is.

"It is in an intimate venue, only 2,000 people, and everyone is up for a good time."

The results finished:
