OBIT-RITA CLEMENTS
DALLAS — Former Texas first lady Rita Crocker Clements has died at age 86. son-in-law, Jim Moroney, says Clements died Saturday at her Dallas home. Moroney, who's publisher of The Dallas Morning News and CEO of the A.H. Belo Corporation, said Sunday that his mother-in-law died of complications due to Alzheimer's disease. COASTAL BARRIERS
HOUSTON — A new study suggests if the Houston area continues to boom for 60 years and sea levels rise a direct hit to Galveston from a massive hurricane could destroy $31.8 billion worth of homes. The Houston Chronicle reports Texas A&M researchers looked at possibly building a coastal barrier about 60 miles long from Galveston to Bolivar Peninsula. Experts say potential residential destruction from a storm surge would drop to $6 billion. The idea for a coastal barrier has been floated since Hurricane Ike hit the Galveston area in 2008. LOS ANGELES — Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio used the eighth annual benefit for the J/P Haitian Relief Organization to publicly praise each other's philanthropic work. DiCaprio was the guest of honor at the $5,000-a-plate dinner Saturday night at Milk Studios, which raised nearly $4 million for Penn's Haitian Relief Organization and its nonprofit partners. DiCaprio was recognized for 20 years of supporting environmental causes through his namesake foundation. DISABLED STUDENT-RECORDING DEVICE
BOSTON — A Maine teen with autism and a neurological syndrome that affects his speaking ability can't talk to his parents about his school day the same way other students can. His family is fighting for the right for him to carry an audio-recording device to ensure he's properly treated when they aren't watching. A novel case heading Monday to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston pits the student's parents against his southern Maine school district, which says the recording device would infringe on other students' privacy rights. GALVESTON, Texas — A guaranteed sight on Texas A&M University at Galveston's campus is students in Navy-issued khaki uniforms. The Galveston County Daily News reports that this year, 579 of the students on the Pelican Island campus participate in the Texas A&M Maritime Academy and the Corps of Cadets. The Maritime Academy's mission is to provide Texas and the United States with highly trained, U.S. Coast Guard licensed merchant officers to serve on ocean and inland waterways vessels. DUNCANVILLE, Texas — Donald Harris isn't a professional educator, but he's about to teach somebody a lesson as he calls out like a carnival barker during a lunchtime chess session at Duncanville High School. "Come on over!" he shouts to a passing student. "I'll get you!" The Dallas Morning News reports the Duncanville bus driver sets up shop in the cafeteria two or three days a week, spreading out an array of chess boards along a table.
