Cabinet reshuffle latest: Theresa May to remove ‘stale, male and pale’ ministers

THERESA May is keen to rebrand her premiership by removing “pale, male and stale” ministers in her upcoming Cabinet reshuffle, it has been reported.

Mrs May is understood to be planning to begin her ministerial reshuffle tomorrow with notable promotions to women and MPs from diverse backgrounds at the forefront.

An aide to Prime Minister said Mrs May wanted to “make sure the Government reflects the modern and diverse country” we live in.

A senior Government source said: “Theresa understands that, when voters look at her Government, they see a lot of stale, male and pale ministers who are the wrong side of 50.

“She will be promoting more women and those from non-white backgrounds, and there will be more of an emphasis on youth.”

Among those tipped for promotion are Suella Fernandes, leader of the backbench Eurosceptics, whose parents came to Britain from Kenya and Mauritius; and Seema Kennedy, Mrs May’s parliamentary aide, whose father was Iranian; Nusrat Ghani, who helped review the party’s general election performance; and Rishi Sunak, who was part of the Tories’ 2015 intake.

Female ministers such as Margot James, Harriet Baldwin, Claire Perry and Sarah Newton also reportedly could climb up the ladder.

Female MPs Lucy Frazer, Anne-Marie Trevelyan and Victoria Prentis are also expected to be given jobs for the first time.

Although senior Tory figures, including Lord Ashcroft, reportedly advised the Prime Minister to radically reboot her Cabinet, “big beasts” Chancellor Philip Hammond, Home Secretary Amber Rudd, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis are expected to remain in place as the Prime Minister wants to avoid “destabilising the Government”.

However the positions of Education Secretary Justine Greening, Conservative Party chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin, Business Secretary Greg Clark and the Leader of the Commons Andrea Leadsom were among those said to be vulnerable.

Meanwhile, a massive flurry of bets has been placed on Andrea Leadsom launching a leadership bid, despite rumours she is facing the chop as Leader of the House.

Mrs Leadsom, who ran against Mrs May following David Cameron’s resignation in June 2016 but later withdrew, has seen her odds slashed from 80/1 to 16/1.

Betway’s Alan Alger said: “The money we’ve seen come in over the last 24 hours could indicate Andrea Leadsom is preparing a bid for the Tory leadership.”

Sources close to the mother-of-three have previously rubbished claims of a challenge.

Michael Gove, who has been winning plaudits as Environment Secretary, is currently joint favourite to succeed Mrs May at odds of 9/2, along with Mr Johnson.

According to one senior Tory: “Michael’s on a one-man mission.”

Mr Gove had been tipped to replace Mr Hammond as Chancellor but a party insider commented: “Michael is extremely bright, but maths is not his strong suit.”
