However, Antonio Mendez (played by Caio Blat) was not who he said he was, and was in fact a gangster posing as a former classmate in order to convince Alex (James Norton) to help him to transport drugs. 

Alex was not surprised when he arrived on the South of France to find that he did not recognise Antonio but despite not knowing who the mysterious man was, he still agreed to spend the weekend with him. 

But the most baffling plot point came when the Russian billionaire willingly handed his passport over so that Antonio could check them into their hotel.

Viewers were left scratching their head as they questioned why Alex had allowed the unknown man to take something which could stop him from travelling home. 

Fans of the BBC series flocked to Twitter to comment on the shocking move, claiming it was an error to give Antonio control of his passport. 

One viewer commented: “I wouldn't have handed my passport over like that!! #McMafia.”

While another continued: “How naive to hand over your passport like that #McMafia - wouldn’t get me doing that!!!”

“Sure hand over your passport to the dodgy guy who isn't your old friend #McMafia,” a third tweeted. 

Someone else shared: “No but why would you give someone your passports?! #McMafia.”

A fifth went on to note: “Hm, think those highly educated business people need to get a bit street smart quick. Handing over passports to a bloke you know isn’t who he says he is. #McMafia.”

While Alex spent tonight’s episode enjoying a sunny break, his mother Oksana (Maria Shukshina) was left heartbroken when she discovered her husband Dimitri (Alexey Serebryakov) was having an affair.
