LAKE WALES — A Sanford woman died Saturday morning when she crashed her car while fleeing officers following a domestic disturbance.
Jacoiya Jabera Jackson, 26, died at the scene when she was ejected from her gray 2012 Hyundai in the single-car collision along U.S. 27, according to Lake Wales Police.
Police said Jackson had been involved in a confrontation along C Street at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, where she held the victim at knifepoint while the victim’s four-year-old child looked on. When the victim tried to call 911, police said, Jackson reportedly forced the phone from the victim’s hand. The victim received minor injuries in the incident.
While officers were investigating the disturbance, Jackson left in her car, police said. A Lake Wales officer caught up with her at U.S. 27 and Chalet Suzanne Road, and she continued northbound even as a Lake Wales officer activated the patrol car’s emergency lights and sirens to get her to stop.
Jackson struck a median just north of Waverly Road after swerving to avoid colliding with another car. Her car rolled several times before it came to rest, said Michelle Cash, spokeswoman for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Lake Wales Police report that Jackson’s driver license had been suspended since January 2010, and she had a criminal history involving retail theft, petty theft and failing to appear in court for driving on a suspending license.
