A pipe burst underneath the skywalk between the Howard Johnson and the city's Discovery parking garage overnight, leaving portions of the hotel's outside damaged and covered in ice Sunday.

SIOUX CITY — The winter weather has not been kind to the 42-year-old Howard Johnson hotel in downtown Sioux City.

A pipe burst underneath the 707 Fourth St. property’s skywalk connection to the Discovery parking garage before midnight Sunday.

This turned the street beneath it into a skating rink and left the adjacent walls and anything else that was drenched by the makeshift waterfall covered in ice Sunday afternoon.

Additionally, a portion of the skywalk structure gave way, leaving insulation and other materials scattered and frozen underneath of it.

This area of the hotel directly connects Jackson and Jones streets and typically serves as a valet or drop-off spot for hotel guests, but orange caution tape blocked access Sunday.

A man who only identified himself as the hotel’s owner declined to comment on the situation.

This latest incident happened just a few days after the Howard Johnson’s sprinkler system malfunctioned Tuesday.

That incident caused the lobby of the 12-story hotel, which was listed on the market for $5.8 million as recently as September, to flood and required the assistance of Sioux City Fire Rescue.
