Around Town: United Way seeks nominations for community awards

Here is your chance to have a say in who is honored March 29 during the United Way of Greater Stark county's annual meeting.

The United Way is accepting nominations for its Community Service Leader Gold Key Awards and the DeHoff Emerging Young Philanthropist Award.

For 56 years, the United Way has recognized community leaders and volunteers for the impact they have in the local community. The Gold Key Service Award recognizes those individuals who have continually demonstrated their dedication and service in a voluntary capacity toward reaching the United Way's Bold Goals 2020 in the areas of Health, Education, and Financial Stability.

Since 2010, the DeHoff Emerging Philanthropist of Stark County Award honors two of the United Way's dedicated campaign volunteers. Bob and Linda DeHoff served as the Alexis de Tocqueville Society co-chairs for more than a decade, assisting in reaching donors who contribute gifts of $10,000 or more. During the 11 years they served as co-chairs, the DeHoffs led efforts to raise more than $11.6 million to benefit residents of Greater Stark County.

The recipient of the DeHoff award, will receive $5,000 to be donated to a health and human services nonprofit organization of their choice.

Julie Wilkes, North American wellness lead for Fortune Global 500 company Accenture, and CEO and owner of Seven Studios, will be the keynote speaker at the American Heart Association's 2018 Canton Go Red For Women Luncheon Feb. 2 at La Pizzaria.

Wilkes earned a bachelor of arts degree in international business from Marietta College and a master's degree in exercise physiology from The Ohio State University. She is also the author of “The 7 Life Miracles,” in addition to being a life coach, motivational speaker and entrepreneur.

She will share her personal story of survival after overcoming a terminal heart condition that originally gave her a life expectancy of age 12.

According to the Heart Association, heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, more than all cancers combined. The Go Red For Women luncheon will feature local exhibitors, inspirational stories from local survivors of heart disease and stroke, a heart-healthy lunch and educational information.

National sponsors for Go Red For Women are Macy’s and CVS Health. Local media sponsors are WHBC and GateHouse Ohio Media, which includes The Repository, The Independent and About Magazine.

Funds raised during the event will go to supporting heart and stroke research and education.

The Massillon Heritage Foundation is hosting the first of four fundraisers for the city's historic Five Oaks, Jan. 20 at Five Oaks at 210 Fourth St. NE. The event starts at 6 p.m. Cost is $75 per person. It will include a wine bar and formal dinner. Entertainment is a live production of "The Voices from Fourth Street."

The Massillon Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization. Its mission is to receive and administer funds for acquiring, restoring, preserving and maintaining properties of significance in Massillon and surrounding areas. Its current focus is Five Oaks, home of the Massillon Woman's Club, which needs significant repairs costing more than $400,000.

Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar in Jackson Township and elsewhere in northeast Ohio will be making a difference in others lives this month.

Now through Jan. 31, the restaurants will participate in their annual fundraising program for the Cleveland area chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Association. Customers at the restaurants can raise money for the chapter by purchasing a $1, $5 or larger denomination pinups. Those donating a pinup of $5 or more will receive an Applebee's voucher for $8 in restaurant savings.

Proceeds will be used to sponsor a child going to the MDA camp this summer. The camp provides children with Muscular Dystrophy adventures such as swimming, horseback riding and fishing.
