Feed the Need food drive
Public Employees collected more than 127,000 pounds of food during the seventh annual countywide Feed the Need public employee food drive. This took place Nov. 13-27 throughout Volusia County as a friendly competition among public employees. Participating organizations included Volusia County Government; Daytona State College; Volusia County School Way Café, Florida Health Department in Volusia County; Phillips and Jordan and Thompson Engineering; and the cities of Daytona Beach, DeBary, DeLand, Deltona, Edgewater, Holly Hill, New Smyrna Beach, Orange City, Ormond Beach, Ponce Inlet, Port Orange and South Daytona. According to Robert Thomas, branch manager of Second Harvest Food Bank of Volusia/Flagler, the 127,000 pounds of food will feed more than 3,500 families for a week. The food donation totals were announced during a presentation Dec. 21 to the Volusia County Council in DeLand.
Kids’ programs continue at Lake Helen library
Children and teens can kick off the new year with free programs at the Lake Helen Public Library, 221 N. Euclid Ave., Lake Helen. Upcoming programs include:
• Gametastic, 3:30 p.m., Tuesdays starting Jan. 9. Families can color, relax and play games. Each week will feature an assortment of board games, coloring sheets and activities. All ages are welcome.
• Block Party, 3:30 p.m., Thursdays starting Jan. 11. Children and teens can get creative with Legos.
• Teen Thursday, 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11. Teens and ‘tweens ages 11 to 18 can learn about Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation film studio.
• Little Readers Storytime, 10 a.m., Fridays starting Jan. 12. Children from 18 months to five years and their caregivers can enjoy storybooks, magnetic stories, music and more.
• Bedtime Storytime, 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 18. All ages can join the staff for an evening of storybooks, magnetic stories, music and more.
• Blow off STEAM, 3:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 22. Children and teens can make articulated hands. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, and art and mathematics.

Halifax Genealogical Society to meet
Halifax Genealogical Society will have the presentation “Principles of Effective Evidence Analysis” with George Morgan at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Ormond Beach Auditorium, 30 S. New England Club to meet
The New England Club will meet 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at 720 N. Frankfort Ave., DeLand. Membership is $10 for the season and meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month through April. Sisters for Life to meet
The “Sisters For Life” Breast Cancer Awareness group will meet 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, 1286 Saxon Blvd., Orange City. DeLand Daugthers of the American Revolution
The DeLand Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Colonel Arthur Erwin will meet noon Friday, Jan. 12, at the Cloisters, 400 E. Howry Ave., DeLand.
