FLAMES ripped through a building site in Hampshire after a late-night fire broke out.

Several properties under construction were destroyed in the blaze, which broke out off Fawley Road in Hythe late last night.

More than 30 firefighters from eight fire stations across Hampshire tackled the inferno.

South Central Ambulance Service was called to the scene at 11.43pm and sent an ambulance crew, an ambulance officer and a hazarous area response team.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "A construction site in Hythe has been badly damaged following a large fire.

"At its height, more than 30 firefighters fought the blaze off Fawley Road.

"The flames engulfed one block of four semi-detached homes and one block of three, all which were being built. No-one was hurt in the incident.

"Firefighters will remain on the scene for most of the morning damping down and dealing with hot spots.

"A fire investigation will be launched to determine how the blaze began.

"Crews from Hythe, Totton, Beaulieu, Hardley, Redbridge, St Mary’s, Eastleigh and Lymington dealt with the incident, using breathing apparatus, jets and the aerial ladder platform to tackle the flames."

The fire broke out near the Seadown Veterinary Hospital in Frost Lane, Hythe.

Photographs posted on social media show flames lighting up the night sky at the height of the blaze.

A Hampshire Police statement says: "Police are appealing for witnesses in relation to a major fire at a construction site at Fawley Road Hythe.
