Friday’s high schools: Frontier holds on to beat Mahar in girls basketball

Frontier Regional’s Ella Deane hit a 3-pointer with a minute left to break a tie game in Orange.

Mahar scored and then got the ball back, but the Red Hawk defense held and Frontier escaped with a 36-35 girls basketball win.

Alexa Boyden had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Red Hawks (4-3-, 3-1 Franklin County), while Deane’s winning shot was part of an 11-point game.

Hampshire Regional 57, Granby 48 — Down by 10 after the first, the Raiders outscored the Rams 25-11 in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Katelyn Pickunka had 20 points to lead Hampshire (6-0), while Caroline O’Connor added 14.

Nora Young led Granby (3-3) with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Julia Frappier had 12 points and five steals.

Boys basketball

Smith Academy 59, Athol 43 — Three players reached double figures as the Falcons (3-4, 1-1 Hampshire North) won on the road.

Jack Zigmont had 16 points, 11 rebounds and three steals, while Matt Bouley had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Brett Gratz had 11 points.

Max Bartlett added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons, who led 20-7 after the first quarter.

Pioneer Regional 76, Belchertown 70 — Mitch Medina had 37 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Orioles fell at home.

Corey Lanoue added 16 points for Belchertown (4-4, 1-0 Hampshire South), which won its league opener.

Northampton 78, Minnechaug 57 — Four Blue Devils scored in double figures as Hamp led 25-4 after the first quarter and coasted to the win.

Henry Doherty (six assists) and Andy Grygorcewicz (nine rebounds) had 15 points apiece, while Jaeden Johndrow and Anthony DeJesus both scored 13 points.

Boys ice hockey

Belchertown 3, Drury 0 — Two first-period goals was enough as the Orioles (2-1-2) skated to a win at the Mullins Center Practice Rink.

Vaughn Gillen, Francis Nigro and Nate Pacheco scored, while Matt Pacheco had two assists.

Ethan Rajpold made 25 saves for his first career shutout, and Cody Lambert added one assist for Belchertown.
